The Answer

The Answer to the Great Question of Life, the Universe and Everything is Forty-two.

Deep Thought · Adams, 1979

Adams chose an ordinary smallish number on purpose. The joke is the design, and later culture reused it: reuse is reception, not a second cosmic constant.

Meet the 42

A telescope in Chile took pictures of forty-two of the biggest rocks between Mars and Jupiter. Psyche was one of them, and one of the two densest. The observatory named the release Meet the 42. That day was forty-two years after Adams’s book. Homage is a fact about the note. It does not make the rocks a second Answer.

NASA / Ames / JPL-Caltech · PIA12348. The grid is the camera.

A camera of forty-two eyes

42 CCDs

The camera

NASA sent Kepler to watch a patch of sky in Cygnus and Lyra. Its camera was a quilt of forty-two electronic chips, called CCDs, ninety-five million pixels in all. A planet crossing its star makes the star look a little dimmer. Those forty-two eyes watched for that blink, night after night, so that worlds too small to photograph could still be counted.

The list

Later, in Kepler’s running list of stars with planets, number 42 was a tiny red sun with three rocky worlds. Nobody named it that because of the camera. Lists reach forty-two on their own. Two true things, noticed together afterward.

Correspondence without a mechanism

The doubles

Sometimes two true 42s sit in the same neighborhood, and the lists never asked each other’s permission. A child can hold that. A physicist can check each numbering system and find they do not share a cause.

Two hard facts. Relation noticed later. That is the Index’s texture.

The number of ways to do those things, for a given size, is a Catalan number. Eugène Catalan wrote the sequence in 1838. The fifth one is 42. The one before it is 14. 1. Natal

The Scribe’s natal Moon prints Aquarius 13°13′. London, 11 October 1978, 08:58. The Moon is how a life needs to belong. In Aquarius that belonging often comes through pattern, through the far friend, through a number that feels like kin. The old image is Ganymede’s cup, poured for the whole table of the sky, not one kitchen. She loved numbers first. She wanted to become love. Years later a verse with the same two numbers ended on charity. A cosmic wink. A little comic. The coordinate existed first.
