Forty-two stages in the wilderness itinerary

The itinerary in Numbers 33 lists forty-two stages. A recorded walk. Not a brick count.

What it supports

A child can hear a journey named stop by stop, from Rameses to the plains of Moab. Moses is said to have written the starting points. The chapter enumerates forty-two stations. That is a textual count, a ritual memory of wandering, not a survey of the dirt. The Vedic home fire also counts: twenty-one bricks, then twenty-one. Both are rites. They are not one rite.

What it does not

Not independently verified as forty-two archaeological camps. The dirt does not have to ratify the list. Not the gārhapatya hearth. 42 stations are a walk. 21 + 21 is a fire.
