Matthew 1:17 announces three groups of fourteen. The gospel names its own arithmetic. That is a control case: encoded pattern, not later observation.
What it supports
An explicit editorial structure in the genealogy preface. 14 + 14 + 14 = 42 seats. The named list has omissions, and the third section is a known counting difficulty. Unlike some recurrences on this shelf, this one was written as a number on purpose.
What it does not
Not a census. Not proof that every 42 on this Index was encoded. The control is the question: how do we tell an authored pattern from an observed one?
