In 1553 England printed forty-two articles of religion. Cranmer’s set. Elizabeth later cut and revised them to thirty-nine. The 42 is the first print’s own count.
What it supports
A named historical cardinality. Title: Articles agreed on by the bishoppes… M. D. LII, published by royal commandment, May 1553, Grafton, June 1553. Drafts ran to 45, then 42. Mary withdrew them. The later 39 is the living Anglican formulary. Convocation approval of 1553 is disputed. Royal mandate is not.
