Bread wheat carries forty-two chromosomes. Three subgenomes, written BBAADD. Sakamura counted them in 1918. The formula is still the field’s own: 2n = 6x = 42.
What it supports
An exact karyotype, not a catalogue seat. Einkorn 14, emmer and durum 28, bread wheat 42. Tetsu Sakamura, Botanical Magazine Tokyo 32 (1918). Karl Sax reached the same count that year. Levy and Feldman 2022 still write 2n = 6x = 42. OECD 2024 prints hexaploid bread wheat as 2n = 6x = 42, genome BBAADD. The integer is the plant that feeds a large fraction of humanity.
What it does not
Not ~42. Not 42 genes. Not 42 megabases. Not molybdenum Z = 42. Proton count is a different object. Oat is also 2n = 42; that is a neighbor, not this card.
