Common oat carries forty-two chromosomes. Three sets of seven pairs, written AACCDD. The field writes 2n = 6x = 42. Same integer as bread wheat. Different plant. Different genomes.

What it supports

An exact hexaploid karyotype. Peng, Yan, Guo et al., Nature Genetics 54 (2022): Common oat (A. sativa L., 2n = 6x = 42, AACCDD genomes). Diploid oats 14, tetraploid 28, cultivated hexaploid 42. Base number x = 7, as in wheat, in a different tribe.

What it does not

Not bread wheat. Not a second trophy for the same cereal. Not genome size. Not molybdenum. The hybridization that made AACCDD is oat’s own history.
