Japanese daiyakudoshi. A man’s great-calamity year, counted as 42 in traditional age.
In Japan a man’s forty-second year is widely kept as a year of special caution. Traditional counting starts at one at birth and adds a year at New Year, so it is not always Gregorian age 42. A folk reading of 四二 as shi-ni, to death, is real Japanese sound-play. Whether the pun made the custom, or was later attached, is disputed.
What it supports
A living ritual count. Norbeck 1955 describes yakudoshi as a complex of supernaturalistic beliefs, with 42 as a man’s great-calamity year. The integer is the custom’s own number, not a conversion.
What it does not
Not Adams. Not biblical 42. Not proof that the homophone caused the rite. Not a Western birthday. The looking records a practice. It does not baptize it as physics.
