Classic TIFF files carry 42 in bytes 2–3 of the header. An arbitrary but carefully chosen number.
Before a machine can see a TIFF picture, it meets 42. Bytes 2 and 3 of the file say whether this is a TIFF at all. The standard calls it an arbitrary but carefully chosen number.
What it supports
ISO 12234-2 names 42 as that identifier. RFC 2302 records the file signatures. Little-endian 42 00, big-endian 00 42, after II or MM. Intentional encoding. Not a measurement.
What it does not
Not Adams proof inside cameras. Not every image format. JPEG does not greet you with 42. The standard does not say why 42, only that it was carefully chosen.
