SC 42
ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 · Artificial intelligence
The joint ISO/IEC subcommittee for artificial intelligence standards, SC 42 under JTC 1, created by JTC 1 in 2017 and ratified in May 2018, with ANSI as secretariat.
SC 42 is the international committee that writes standards for artificial intelligence, run jointly by ISO and IEC under JTC 1. JTC 1 created it at its 32nd plenary in Vladivostok (Resolution 12) and named Wael William Diab chair. Its first meeting was in Beijing, 18 to 20 April 2018, and its establishment was ratified in May 2018. ANSI holds the secretariat. In October 2026 the ISO page lists 44 published standards and 51 in development.
What it supports
An exact committee designation for the standing international AI standards body, with a published scope, a secretariat, and standards such as ISO/IEC 42001. Same institutional grammar as IAU Commission 42.
What it does not
Not a claim that ISO picked 42 for Deep Thought. SC numbers are sequential seats, and SC 41 and SC 43 are real committees too. Not ISO/IEC 42001 or any single standard number collapsed into this plate. Not proof of anything about AI. Not Adams.
