Forty-Two Martyrs of Amorium
Byzantine cohort of exactly 42 officials and notables captured at Amorium (838) and martyred at Samarra on 6 March 845.
After the Abbasid sack of Amorium, forty-two Byzantine senior officials were held captive. After refusing conversion, they were executed at Samarra on 6 March 845. PmbZ Online #10542 records the cohort. Passiones BHG 1209–1214c and the Synaxarion lock the feast to that count. Distinct from the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, who are exactly 40.
What it supports
Exact historical and hagiographic 42 with more than one office: prosopography, Passio, and Synaxarion. Named members include Theodoros Krateros (PmbZ #7679). The liturgical Greek keeps τεσσαράκοντα δύο.
What it does not
Not about forty. Not the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste. Not a Coptic name-list that PmbZ flags as insecure for this cohort. Not Adams.
